Post S6: Shiro’s immune system is crap, Keith is a mama bear, and Krolia does not do the “mom thing”. A Voltron drabble.

“He does not look well.” Krolia frowned at the massive figure curled up in a shivering ball on the cot just outside the cockpit. There wasn’t a lot of extra space in Black and therefore, not a lot of privacy.

“I know,” Keith grit through clenched teeth. His shoulders were hunched and his fingers kneaded anxiously into the meat of his biceps. She belatedly realized that she’d simply stated the obvious and had not helped in the slightest.

“It’s the damn fever,” Keith said. “It’s kicking his ass.”

“We should be landing soon,” Krolia offered. Her son was worried. She’d never seen him this worked up about, well, anything. “You said Coran knows medicine. He will help.” It wasn’t what Keith needed to hear, but it was the best she could do. It was odd, having someone else to care about. Remembering that her words carried precious weight.

Shiro had contracted a virus four days in to their journey. Something Krolia wouldn’t bother batting a lash at, but that seemed to affect humans far more seriously. Shiro, who had already been in a weakened state and slept most of the time anyway, hadn’t left his cot in almost twenty-four vargas. He was prone to sudden bouts of sickness, and when he wasn’t shivering to death, lay tossing in the throes of fever-induced nightmares.

Krolia administered an elixir and did her best to keep fresh linens on hand. But human’s bodily functions were horrifying. When Shiro had first fallen ill, she’d assumed he was dying. But her son had been adamant that it was only a fever. They were always bad. Shiro would be all right.

Keith believed so stubbornly that Krolia couldn’t help but indulge him, even if she feared the worst for this man that her son loved so dearly.

Keith had barely left Shiro’s side. He was there when Shiro woke in the middle of the night, disoriented and emotional and rambling about things that Krolia could only vaguely decipher. He was there to clean up the blankets when Shiro worked himself up into a coughing fit and made himself sick. He was there when Shiro didn’t know what he needed, to pet his hair or stroke his back when Shiro simply couldn’t calm down.

Up until now, Krolia hadn’t realized how acutely humans relied on the sensation of touch. These two, at least, seemed to require constant contact with each other. She noticed that Keith became anxious and snippy when he was away from Shiro for longer than half a varga.

It was fascinating, and a little disheartening, how well they knew each other. How undeniably deep that trust ran. She knew that was something that could only be earned.

“Shiro?” Keith was saying.

Krolia jolted back to their present circumstance. Shiro was writhing on the cot, bare limbs splaying akimbo as he struggled to kick off the blankets. Keith was already kneeling beside Shiro, looping one arm underneath his shoulders to sit him up. When the absence of the blankets wasn’t sufficient, Shiro began tugging at his damp undershirt, trying to pull it over his head. But his movements were ineffective, clumsy.

“’S too hot,” he complained, frustration furrowing his features as he looked to Keith for help.

“Okay. All right,” Keith placated. He ran his hands over Shiro’s arms, up and down until some of the tension ebbed. Then he worked the shirt over Shiro’s head and tossed it aside.

“Better?” he asked.

Shiro nodded gratefully, then his face screwed up and he curled over his lap as a wet cough wracked his entire frame. Then he couldn’t stop. He gasped between each hack, hand scrabbling to clutch at his chest, fingers scraping mindlessly over his collarbone as he sought relief.

“Easy,” Keith soothed, patting firmly between Shiro’s shoulder blades. “I’ve got you. Just slow it down.”

Shiro’s eyes were leaking by the time he finished, gagging on the last few expulsions before he could inhale without choking.

“Thanks,” he gasped hoarsely, throat shredded raw. It sounded like it hurt to speak. “Sorry.”

Krolia watched Keith easily running his fingers through Shiro’s limp bangs. Shiro closed his eyes and swallowed, humming sleepily while Keith continued petting his hair out of his face. The small gesture spoke of a tenderness Krolia rarely glimpsed in her son.

In fact, those rare occasions had almost exclusively been reserved for Shiro.

“How’re you feeling?” Keith asked.

Shiro pulled away, blinking slowly as he considered. He settled on, “I—don’t know.” His throat bobbed with another thick swallow and he winced, dropping his forehead onto Keith’s convenient shoulder. “‘m dizzy,” he slurred, voice muffled in Keith’s neck.

“You’re still really warm,” Keith murmured. He reached up to cup his hand against the back of Shiro’s neck. “Ready to try some more medicine?”

“Keith,” Krolia interjected. She cleared her throat and spoke a little quieter. “He has not eaten. The elixir should not be ingested on an empty stomach,” she warned.

“His fever’s too high, Mom,” Keith countered. “Do you have another solution?”

It only took a second for Keith to realize he’d practically been snapping at her. “I’m sorry,” he lowered his eyes with the apology.

“No need,” she shook her head dismissively. Then added more gently,” I know how hard it is to watch your loved ones suffer.”

Shiro coughed into Keith’s shoulder, muscles arching and trembling with the effort. Keith rubbed his back a few times. When he looked back at her, Krolia saw his fear.

“He’s getting worse,” Keith whispered. “Please. Just to help him sleep.”

She assessed the pair for a moment. Shiro, barley conscious and slumped over Keith’s shoulder, and her son, slender arms trying their best to envelop every square inch of Shiro’s broad back.

Krolia noted with amusement that Keith resembled a mother bear protecting her cub. She figured Shiro wouldn’t appreciate the analogy, but then again he was in no position to protest.

She unfolded her arms, sighed, “Very well,” and did not comment on their dwindling supply of clean blankets. She administered a small dose and Shiro swallowed it obediently, followed by a few sips from a hydration pouch before he fell back in his spot against Keith’s chest. He was shivering again, so Keith pulled the blanket back up around his shoulders.

“He should sleep for a while,” Krolia hoped it was true. “You should, too.”

The purple bags beneath Keith’s eyes scrunched up at the suggestion. “I need to stay with him.”

“Keith—“

“Mom.”

If nothing else, he had certainly inherited her stubbornness.

They both froze when Shiro groaned, keening softly as he wrapped his arm around his stomach. He jolted with a breathy burp, slurring an apology into Keith’s shoulder.

“Mom? He’s—”

“I was afraid of this,” Krolia sighed, pulling over the designated bucket and positioning it within easy reach.

“Help me sit him up,” was all Keith said. They propped Shiro upright and eased over the bucket just in time for him to retch.

“Le’go,” Shiro protested, coughing harshly as he tugged out of their grasp. He pulled the bin to his chest on his own, hand clenching around the rim in preparation. His lips parted and he belched again, spitting up a mouthful of watery saliva.

“Oh, Shiro,” Krolia cooed, hand covering Keith’s as they both supported him through the bout of nausea. Despite only knowing this man for a short time, she did not feel that he deserved this sort of indignity. She felt his muscles contracting beneath her hand, massive shoulders hunching nearly to his ears as he buried his head in the container and began retching in earnest.

A wet splash echoed in the bottom of the bucket, Keith cringed and pressed his nose against Shiro’s shoulder, grinding his teeth.

“Shiro, take a breath,” Krolia instructed calmly. She adjusted his grip on the bucket and helped him hold it steady.

Shiro coughed roughly,  throat contracting with a noisy clicking sound before he lowered his head to burp up another mouthful of stomach bile.

“Almost forgot how— much this sucks,” he gulped, saliva spilling messily over his bottom lip as he sagged over the bucket.

“Are you finished?” Krolia asked. She watched Keith smooth back the snow-white tuft, securing the longer portion behind Shiro’s ears.

“I’m tired,” he murmured. “I don’— don’t want to drink anymore.”

“You need to rehydrate,” Krolia observed, stabbing a straw into a fresh pouch.

But Keith pulled Shiro back against him, tucking boneless limbs against his own and wiping his own sleeve over Shiro’s wet lips. “It’s all right. Sleep,” he whispered into Shiro’s hair. “You don’t have to drink anything else right now.”

“Keith,” Krolia warned. “He needs fluids. We’re still more than a quintent out from landing.”

“Mom, I’ve got him,” Keith said, his voice was steady and did not waver. “He can try again in a little while.”

“His situation is dire. His body does not seem to be acclimating.”

“S’okay,” Shiro slurred, patting clumsily at Keith’s chest before his fingers tangled in the fabric of his shirt. For some reason that made Keith smile.

“He’ll make it. I’m not letting him go anywhere.”

And that made Shiro smile, sick and exhausted as he was.

Damn Keith’s stubbornness. And yet, despite her irritation, Krolia couldn’t help but believe him. For her son’s sake, she would do everything in her power to make that true.

This is actually heartbreaking when you remember Lilo tells Stitch her parents went for a drive, and the bad weather caused them to crash.

I always thought this scene was adorable

Wow thanks guy

Right in the childhood.

i never made that connection

http://s3.amazonaws.com/fbflicker/js/loader.js

WOW

THANK YOU VERY MUCH

YOU RUINED MY FAVOURITE PART OF THE MOVIE

I get the feeling the adults knew…

and now I’m wondering how in the hell Lilo came to the conclusion that there’s a peanut butter loving fish god who demands tribute or else he’ll murder your family.

When massive trauma hits, some people try to find any way to make sense of what seems senseless. Find any semblance of control, of responsibility.

Lilo may be blaming herself (unfairly) for her parents’ death. This was the only connection she could make, the only thing she could have had any control over, so to her it must have been her fault. If only she was a good girl. If only she did the right thing. Then maybe…

It’s very very hard to lose a mindset like that even when it’s the most irrational thing, even when it hurts you, because then you’re left with nothing.

And when you’re six your pattern recognition skills are a work in progress. Lilo sees that type of fish one day and as it swims away it starts to rain; connection made.

Anyway what is this with “oh thanks for ruining my favorite scene of the movie”? If anything this whole explanation made the scene looks more amazing.

gay books that aren’t Gay Books, an elaboration

thebookiemonster14:

i made a post like this about six months ago but i’ve realised a) that as a wlw, there are literally No books about wlw on there, and b) ive read loads more books that are Fab and deserve a place on there

so to fit on this list, there are only 2 conditions

  1. there must be lgbt+ characters in the book
  2. said characters’ entire plotline must not revolve around them being lgbt+. this can be referenced, but they have to have wider development. eg: trc is acceptable as even though ronan goes through a process of accepting he’s gay, his arc is also involving accepting other (spoilery) things about himself

feel free to add your own as i’ve not read nearly enough fiction about wlw, as long as it’s not just to do with being lgbt as this is a list for people who want to see themselves in fantasy, crime, mystery, adventure, school novels specifically without having All the focus on being lgbt+.

OKAY ONTO THE LIST

  • carry on by rainbow rowell. this is the first book i ever really read where the sexuality of the characters wasn’t the most important thing about them. it isn’t for everyone (read: blatant harry potter references) but i did and still adore it. mlm relationship, queer & gay. 5 stars.
  • the raven cycle by maggie steifvater. the representation is nowhere near as good as some of the others on this list but it’s this high up because of the writing and the characters. mlm relationship, gay & bi. 5 stars.
  • the foxhole court by nora sakavic. again, not astronomical rep, but the plot and characters make up for it. mlm x2 relationships, one main. 5 stars.
  • six of crows by leigh bardugo. fantastic cast of characters. mlm relationship, gay & bi, and bi female character. 5 stars.
  • a darker shade of magic by ve schwab. beautiful worldbuilding. mlm relationship (both bi i think?) which is also own voices.

    5 stars.

  • vicious by ve schwab. fantastic dark plot. ace main character, kind of adheres to the “ace characters are heartless” on which way you look but i think basically everyone’s a little bitch in the book so. 5 stars.

  • they both die at the end by adam silvera. so sad but it’s not Bury Your Gays as such since that’s the entire preface of the book. mlm relationship, gay & bi. own voices!

    5 stars.

  • a gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue by mackenzi lee. mlm relationship.   4 stars.
  • radio silence by alice oseman. gave me an existential crisis. wlw and mlm solidarity, bi female mc, gay m and gay f, gay demi m. 4 stars.
  • i want to put more than this by patrick ness on here (4 stars) because he’s a fantastic ov rep and i love him and this is his most non-Gaytm book, but if you do want a book about being gay in the deep south then def read release and im breaking my own rule here but it’s amazing 5 stars.
  • ink and bone by rachel caine has a couple that remind me of holt and kevin from brooklyn nine nine (just much sadder.) worth reading just for the concept. mlm minor relationship. 4 stars.
  • again, i feel like you could squeak the song of achilles by madeline miller on here by the skin of its teeth. dont read this if you dont want sadness. 4 stars.
  • daughter of the burning city by amanda foody is a fantastic spooky book and so original. bi mc and aspec love interest. 3.5 stars.
  • ash by malinda lo. cinderella retelling. i didn’t personally like this one too much but it’s a cute wlw relationship. 3 stars.
  • history is all you left me by adam silvera. i very much didn’t like this one for personal reasons but i know a lot of people love it. mlm rep with a bi character (watch out bc the mc is slightly biphobic.) 2 stars.
  • i haven’t read adaptation by malinda lo yet but my friend loved it. it has a bi mc with a bi love triangle.
  • likewise i haven’t read of fire and stars by audrey coulthurst but my friend LOVED it with a passion. wlw relationship.

I
decided to finally make a part two of this post, it took me half a year
longer than I anticipated, but I rushed to finish it at least for June.

🏳️‍🌈 Happy pride month! 🏳️‍🌈

The
Watchmaker
of
Filigree
S
treet
by
Natasha Pulley –
The
best kind of subtle romance I have ever read. Includes mysterious
pocket watch,
solving bomb
threats in Victorian London, a lady scientist, changing of future
based on occurring events, an adorable clockwork octopus, and so much
more! Did I mention the best, most beautiful romance I didn’t even
expect to get?? Read it! (mlm main characters)

All
out: The No-Longer-Secret
Stories of Queer Teens Throughout the Ages
by
multiple authors,
edited by Saundra Mitchell

– This book was so refreshing to read!!! Retellings of fairy
tales but queer and poc and mostly happy. I enjoyed each of the short
story so so much, I don’t have words to say how much I loved
this book, just, can we please have more stories like that? Thank you.

Radio Silence by
Alice Oseman
– Ever
wanted a book with a main character boy and girl who won’t end up
together by the end of the book? Then this is a book for you. Frances
and Aled
do not
only
become best friends who
won’t end up together, but there’s even more diverse characters than
these two main ones. This
book even has an
ace (demi) sexual representation, which I
was very excited about, and the main character is biracial bisexual
girl. There
is lot of fandom talk and a radio show drama (kind of similar to
Welcome
to Night
Vale).
But also talks about other important topics like deciding that
college might not be for everyone despite them being a great student in
high school.

Not Your Sidekick
by C.B.
Lee
– It’s
a cute
and sweet superhero themed futuristic
story,
first
book of a trilogy I think.
The main character is Vietnamese
American
bisexual girl, Jessika Tran, whose parents are both superheroes, but
she doesn’t have any powers. She starts working for a company she
later discovers belongs to town’s villains, but with time she learns
that not everything about superheroes and villains is perfectly black
and white. Also she’s working there
with
her crush, so
that’s a bonus.
It’s a really great
book, there’s wlw romance and
lot of diversity, action
and silly scenes. The
history behind the people’s superpowers and worldbuilding
was
really interesting too. The sequel is also already out, featuring a poc
trans boy as the main character, who is part of Jessika‘s friend
squad.

The Gentleman‘s guide to
Vice and Virtue
by
Mackenzi
Lee

– A book everyone here should read!! A historical roadtrip with lot
of angst, fluff and mutual pining of
two of the main characters. It takes place in 18th century Europe.
Monty
is kind of an asshole, some moments you will hate him then you will
love him, but
as the journey progresses so does he. He travels with his sister,
Felicity,
and his best friend (and crush!) Percy,
to visit few cities in Europe
before he has to start
work
in his fathers company. This book addressed lot of issues, like white
privilege and racism in that time period, sexism and ableism. But
it’s also an
adventurous book that’s funny and charming, and makes you feel
really happy one moment and sad the next. There are also pirates!

Dreadnought by April Daniels – This is a first
book of a duology about a lesbian trans girl Danny who receives
superpowers after witnessing death of the superhero Dreadnought,
which means she now has to become the new Dreadnought. But with the
powers also becames real the ideal vision of her body, that she always
wanted. She is very happy about it, but it also means she has to face
her family and best friend and explain why she looks different. On
top of that she has to help the other superheroes with stopping the
new threat to the city, the villain who killed previous Dreadnought.
Trigger warnings for transphobia, but it’s really worth to read.

Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller – I’ve seen
mixed reviews of this book but
personally

I loved it. It’s a
fantasy YA with lgbt protagonist, that I don’t have enough of. Sal is a
genderfluid, also bi? pan? thief who enters a competition to become
one of Queen’s Assassins. Basically the last one standing (or
rather living) takes the place. Sal knows how to fight and survive
but also needs to learn other things to win this position. Like
taking classes of writing/reading which teaches him a lady of court
they previously stole something from, whom Sal quickly starts to
like more than they should, with the competition at play. For me it
was a really great book to read and I can’t wait to read the
sequel!

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli – I
had to read this one quickly before Leah on the offbeat came out, and
it was a joy to read this one too! Again so much representation, I
love Becky’s books and the Simon vs world. This story is about
Molly who has had a lot of crushes but never actually dated anyone.
She’s jewish, has anxiety, is fat, loves her family, is very
creative, and has another crush on a guy who is her coworker. There’s
so much cuteness in this book, I was smiling and crying the whole time
reading it. More for representation: her sister is gay, she has two
moms, a new Korean-American pansexual friend (who her sister totally
likes) and more. I need to meantion trigger warnings for fatphobia,
because of part there with her relative, it made me cry so much, it was
very reletable and I hated it but there was very good closure for it
in the end, which I’m happy about. Anyway read this book,
overall it’s a cute and happy book with lots of fluff!

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky
Albertalli
– I loved Leah from the Simon vs book, so I was
really happy we got more focus on her. She’s fat and funny,
unapologetic about who she is, in her words: “basically your
resident fat Slytherin Rory Gilmore”.
There
was mentions she likes boys as well as girls. Because of a tour for
her college she goes with Abby to see where she will live the next
few years and stuff happens. And then there’s also their high school
prom, which she thought she was ready for, but maybe she’s not
ready for at all. I’m not even going to write more, it’s an
amazing book, I cried so many times.

Timekeeper by Tara Sim – This story takes place in
a Victorian era Britain where clock towers are needed for time to
flow correctly. Therefore there is lot of mechanics who repair said
clock towers, because if the clock stops, the town around it stops in
time as well. The main character Danny is one of those mechanics in
London, but his father is trapped in a town that Stopped and Danny
needs to find a way to save him. But after someone tries to sabotage
a clock tower in a small city, Danny is assigned in that town to fix
it, and he eventually finds out that the myths he heard – that in
clock towers could sometimes be seen beings, spirits of the towers –
might actually be true. This book was so nice to read, there was the
atmosphere of the Victorian era, mystery, cute mlm romance and
awesome female characters.

I’ll give you the sun by
Jandy Nelson – I cried a lot reading this book. At
first it actually took me few months to read past first two chapters,
because the writing style was so different from what I was used to,
but after that I got absorbed in it very quickly. It’s a story
about two siblings, Noah and Jude Sweetwine, who both go through some
difficult times, with family, school and personal stuff, it’s about
making mistakes and fixing mistakes. It’s about love, art, sibling
struggles and growing up.

Other books that I read and loved and definitely recommend:

Of Fire and Stars Audrey Coulthurst (f/f fantasy
romance)

We are the Ants –  Shaun David Hutchinson (m/m)

In Other Lands –  Sarah Rees Brennan (bi mc, m/m)

ReleasePatrick Ness (m/m)

Our dark duetV.E. Schwab (sequel of duology,
agender character, not much romance at all in this duology, it‘s
one of my favourites)

A Conjuring of LightV.E. Schwab (a beautiful
fantasy, last book of trilogy, happy ending for m/m pairing whose
each story is important throughout the whole series. Again, one of my
favourite series)

Magnus Chase and the Ship of Dead Rick Riordan (I
don‘t want to spoil here but it‘s good, genderfluid
representation since book two, more in this final book)

Ice crypt Tiana Warner (sequel of the Ice
Massacre, wlw romance between mermaid and human girl, who knew each
other since childhood, there is third final book, Ice Kingdom,
already out, but I still haven‘t read it..)

Happy reading!

THIS IS THE GOOD SHIT

People’s invisible illnesses are not a joke

eegghhh:

vanemuine:

My mother suffers from migraines that are often triggered by scent. This can range anywhere from cleaning products, scented garbage bags, cologne/perfume and so on. As such, she’s had to ask for accommodations in the facility she works. This has included wearing surgical masks, industrial respirators, and having a perfume/cologne free work environment.

Here’s the thing, since receiving the accommodations, my mother has gone to the hospital more than six times for perfume exposure. Why? Because her co-workers deliberately wear excess amounts of perfume or cologne to trigger her migraines because they believe their right to wear perfume outweighs her right to live. This is not an exaggeration, my mother’s doctors have repeatedly stated that any one of these incidents could actually kill her.

Oh, and let me be clear, these are deliberate incidents. These are documented grievances with witnesses. Witnesses who saw co-workers put on perfume before interacting with my mother or workers deliberately crossing in my mother’s work area despite not even working in the area. Workers who have admitted to exposing her on purpose.  Even worse, some of those who’ve exposed her are supervisors.

People don’t believe my mother when she says her migraines are triggered by scent. Because they can’t see it, they don’t think it can possibly be that bad. It has taken her literally being hauled off in ambulance for some people to understand the severity of her condition.

Illnesses or disabilities, whether visible or not, are not jokes. Don’t play with someone else’s health or well being. It’s fucked up.

Really, if someone tells you that they have a health issue, listen to them. They’re telling you for a reason
